Erik Akerboom is a Dutch top official. He is the secretary general of the Ministry of Defence. Previously, he was the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism. Erik studied from 1982 to 1986 at the police academy in Apeldoorn. After his studies, he joined the police in Utrecht, where he held various positions until 1998. During this time he earned his Master's degree in political science at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Akerboom then became Director of Democratic Rule of Law at the General Intelligence and Security Service. Since 2003 he was the highest police commander in the region Noord-Brabant. As the successor of Tjibbe Joustra, he then became National Coordinator for Counterterrorism in April 2009. In this function he integrated the NCTB with the National Safety and cyber security. On November 16th, 2012 the Cabinet announced his new function as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Defence. On December 1, 2012, Akerboom followed Ton Annink in this position.
